This magnificent pipe tobacco is grown and cured by a small farm in rural Saint James Parish that has been producing high quality barrel-cured perique tobacco for generations.
Perique pipe tobacco is often considered the holy grail of pipe tobaccos, as perique is used as a component in so many blends of pipe tobacco. And this is fitting because most tobacco enthusiasts consider it too strong to smoke by itself.
Wholeaf Tobacco is pleased to have finally added Perique Pipe Tobacco to our product lineup! Perique pipe tobacco is pretty uncommon already, but to find it in the whole leaf tobacco format has been very difficult.
After a bit of air drying, the somewhat browned leaves are cleaned and packed into wooden hickory whiskey barrels. The tobacco leaves are kept under constant pressure using oak blocks and huge screw jacks, which forces nearly all the air out of the moist leaf matter. Roughly one time a month the pressure is released, and each of area of the leaf is worked by hand to allow a little air back into the leaf, which creates a fantastic pipe tobacco. After a year of this process, the perique pipe tobacco is ready for smoking, but you can keep it fresh under pressure for many years if you wanted to.
